Like a whole lot of things. And one thing that it says time and time again is that women are the weaker gender. Men are the head of the household and women were created to help them, to stand behind them and not next to them. Women The amish community voiceless, but that doesn't mean they don't have an important role in Amish society.

For the modern woman, this is horrific. Any woman who exerts herself or questions her man would be punished in Amish society. Many wear the traditional white, sturdy bonnet that is often associated with Little House on the Prairie style bonnets.

There are others that are more flexible and look more like handkerchiefs. Some of the bonnets and handkerchiefs can be black, too, and are mostly worn in the winter time.

Women will grow their hair their entire lives and never cut it. So imagine how hard it is to tuck all that hair up under a bonnet.

Surely, they must adjust the bonnet sizes to fit all that hair inside. If a woman cuts her hair, she runs the risk of being shunned or excommunicated from the Amish community.

In less severe cases, they will simply shame her which is a common practice that ensures members of the church abide by God's law. Well, for the Amish women, these sorts of thoughts would be considered sinful. If the congregation were to hear her thoughts, she would surely be shunned.

Women must, no matter what, have children. And not just one or two. Women must have several children. With a lifestyle that depends solely on the family and the support of each other, it makes sense that having a large family would be beneficial.

Having many children lessens the burden and can be prosperous. A childless Amish woman does not exist, only if, she were infertile.
